Adaptive Cycling: Where to Start and How Far you Can GO!

I recently sat down to chat with Bradley Fisher to pick his brain and hear about all the progress he and his daughter, Lillia (19), have made in cycling since I last saw them 6 years ago. They were an immediate inspiration to our family when we met, just weeks after receiving Rowan’s diagnosis. In Episode 13 of the podcast we hear about the transformative power of inclusive bicycle travel. Through adaptive cycling, Bradley has crafted a life of adventure and discovery for his family. Here, we delve into Bradley's journey, the various bikes they have utilized. He also shares about the the impactful program, 'Out Our Front Door,' promoting inclusivity and exploration in the biking community with their program Bike Camping for Everyone. There are so many options available, it’s simply a matter of getting started and seeing where it takes you.

Discovering a Passion for Adaptive Cycling

Bradley Fisher, a lifelong Chicagoan, husband, father, and teacher, discovered the joys of cycling early on. After receiving the nod from his daughter's pediatrician, he introduced her to the world of biking, starting with a simple baby seat. Over the years, Bradley's dedication led to creating a unique adaptive setup to accommodate his daughter's needs and fuel her passion for biking. As Lillia grew, Bradley creatively adapted their bikes to suit her needs, from a trailer cycle with pedal straps to custom running boards. Engaging local experts, like those at Project Mobility, enriched their journey by offering reliable expertise and guidance.

Inspiration Becomes Action: Forming 'Out Our Front Door'

Bradley’s experience with a family from an Adventure Cycling Association tour inspired him to make biking accessible for families with special needs. His involvement with 'Out Our Front Door' evolved from a suggestion for adaptive cycling to the realization of a robust program that welcomes individuals of all abilities. Beyond biking, this initiative weaves community, adventure, and inclusivity into each ride. Their program, 'Bike Camping for Everyone,' merges typically developing kids and those with adaptive needs, providing a wholesome experience for families. These valuable outdoor adventures push parents beyond perceived limitations, fostering self-discovery and community participation.

Planning Around Individual Needs

The journey's success lies in adapting activities to meet everyone's needs while continuously challenging them to expand their horizons. The Fisher family’s approach highlights how flexibility can transform daunting tasks into truly enriching experiences. From hotel stays to opting for trailering additional bikes, each decision supports fostering enjoyment and independence. Lillia rides her bike to school every day, even during winter in Chicago. She can ride tandems, a solo recumbent, AND a 2 wheel eBike!

The Road Ahead: Continuing the Adventure

Lillia’s cycling adventures continue with a planned return to Idaho for a week-long cycling tour. Opting for a tandem bike for this experience ensures a blend of safety, participation, and enjoyment. Bradley Fisher’s story exemplifies how passion, adaptability, and community involvement intertwine to shatter barriers. Through their active participation in adaptive cycling, the Fisher family sets a remarkable example of what families can accomplish when they embrace unfamiliar challenges together. Their journey continues, inspiring countless others to see beyond limitations and journey boldly into new adventures.

They have inspired us to take the next step in getting Rowan closer to riding on 2 wheels. She has mastered her big trike and Rip Rider, and has been working on her bike. After my conversation with Bradley, we purchased a big kid 20” Balance Bike for Rowan for Christmas (currently on sale for $99 from Mendham Bikes) and have already started working on that in Physical Therapy. Her brother models riding the balance bike and then she alternates between riding that and her pedal bike. One step (or new bike) at a time. I can envision where she will be with cycling when she is Lillia’s age! Adventures await!
